[ She doesn't care if Steve never gets a tattoo in his life. She doesn't care if he never pierces his ear, or lets her put eyeliner on him, or learns how to headbang. She loves him just as he is, dorky polo shirts and too-tight jeans and all.
Which isn't to say she wouldn't gladly get him in some sick-looking band merch, or take him to a show, or happily help him peruse a wall of flash, but she knows that's probably not in the cards. She can still tease him about it, though. ]
Hell no I'm not taking that deal. I have no problem if you want to get my bite mark tattooed on your ass, baby, I'll hold your hand the entire time, make sure your artist does a good job.
You're so weird. I wouldn't hold out hope on that one, really doesn't sound like a great date night to me. [Steve considers.] Guess we're gonna have to start going out on dates, huh? Like real people do? Instead of just hiding away and screwing like bunnies.
Yeah, but you knew that going in to this. [ Her being weird was a given. Also, she's said and done a lot weirder things than admit to wanting to see him get a tattoo before, this is nothing. ] Guess we will. Kind of a bummer. I really like screwing like bunnies with you.
[ She sighs, contemplating trying to force the issue by steering things into more sexual waters, but even though she'll happily go there if he feels the urge, she's finding that she actually just...wants to talk to him. About anything. Gross. ]
Tell me about these dates. Where are you gonna take me?
[Then getting a tattoo. Of her teeth. On his ass.] I mean listen, it's obvious that some of the dates are gonna get a little sexy so don't be too bummed. We'll have to like, come of with a list of places where we want to bone.
But.
Maybe some nice things too. There's a diner in Shelbyville that has really great lemon meringue pies. They like torch the little blob on top and it's so good. Or... can you ice skate?
[ It would be really sexy. She'd keep biting it once it healed, too because who is she to refuse to follow directions? ] Well, yeah, we've already got the movies and the reptile house.
[ The diner sounds good. She likes lemony things, and pie is always fucking delicious no matter the season, so that sounds like a great date. Shelbyville is far enough away, too, that she won't have to worry about people giving him the stink-eye for being seen on a date with her. She's not going to voice that thought to him, though. He probably won't like it. ]
I've never tried. But I can rollerskate, that's kind of the same thing, right?
Uhh well balance is balance. You'd probably get the hang of it.
Wait. You can rollerskate?
[Why is that mental image so good? Because when Steve thinks of the roller rink he thinks of leg warmers and neon and leggings and high pony tails and Eddie is none of that.] You can't rollerskate to Metallica.
Can you ice skate? [ She's assuming so, or he wouldn't ask, but it's still an amusing mental image. She'd never pictured Steve decked out in winter finery gliding around on the ice, but considering how sporty he is, she isn't surprised that it's actually really easy to picture it. ]
You don't need music to learn to rollerskate, dingus, just a flat patch of road. When I moved here there was a family in the park who had a teen girl, her name was um, Cathy, and she had a pair of skates she let the rest of us borrow. We'd all take turns lacing up her skates and shuffling around. It was kind of fun. Trying to play tag when half the team could just run over the grass made it really challenging.
[Steve laughs softly. Picturing Eddie as a little girl is harder than picturing her at the roller rink.] Sounds like a good time.
Yeah, I can ice skate. Did hockey for a while in elementary school but then Tommy had his 9th birthday party at SkateLand and that was all any of us wanted to do. [He makes a small sound.] I couples skated with Kate Belowski and we held hands. It was very cool.
Yeah, we had fun. [ Her life hasn't all been terrible. There's been good parts of it too.
She never knew Steve as a little boy, but she's seen some pictures around his house and he was just as cute as she might imagine him being, with that shock of hair that was already impressive and his big brown eyes. She bets Kate Belowski was blown away by her good luck to get to skate with Steve Harrington. ]
Do I need to hunt this Kate girl down and fight her for you, because I will.
[There's a chuckle.] Considering that her family moved to Texas like two months later, I'm pretty sure that you're okay there. How about you? Anyone I need to hunt down and take out? I'm getting good at fighting you know, I could do it.
Maybe she's just biding her time and she'll come back. I should be prepared.
[ She scoffs, an immediate no surfacing that she bites back. She hasn't told Steve in so many words that he's her first boyfriend because it feels kind of silly to admit. She's twenty, for fuck's sake, and she's not a virgin. The fact that he's the only boy who's ever said I love you to her shouldn't be so weird, but it is, and she doesn't know why.
Maybe if she convinces him to come down to Indy with her to see a show she just won't go visit some of her old friends. ]
I'm sure you could. But nah, there's no one you need to worry about.
Yeah, what, you already took care of them yourself? [The tone is joking but the sentiment is there; Steve really does think that Eddie would have destroyed any stalkers she might have had all on her own.]
[ Nobody would be dumb enough to stalk her, but yes. If she did have anyone trying for things she wouldn't want, she definitely would have taken care of it herself. ] Popped 'em right in the kisser with my rings on, you know what I'm like.
[ Here's a question she never thought she'd be asked. ]
Hm. I... [ Her tone lowers a little, like she's almost shy, admitting something she normally would keep secret. ] There's this art museum in Indy I saw a brochure for once. I've always wanted to go and visit it, but you have to buy tickets, and every time I'm there [ meaning in Indianapolis ] I'm there for a show. That I've bought tickets for. So I don't have money for anything else. That would be nice.
[Museums are really not Steve's thing, but he hears the way Eddie's voice pitches, fuzzes at the sides. And his knee-jerk reaction is not boring but I can give her something to be happy about.]
[ Her first response is something along the lines of oh no, you'll be bored, but she doesn't know that. Maybe he won't be bored. Maybe he'll find some gallery that he loves, or some sculpture that captures his attention, or maybe fulfilling the role of doting boyfriend would be enough entertainment for him that he really won't mind taking her. ]
You'll have to drive, my van won't last a trip that long. [ There's a warm glow in her chest, ignited by Steve's easy acquiescence to her hesitantly mentioning something she'd like to do. Is this what being in a relationship is like? She could get used to this. ] And, I mean, we don't have to. It's a long way to drive to look at some paintings.
My car my music. Can you handle it, Munson? Steve Perry for an hour and a half? [He's not going to dignify her trying to let him out of it. She asked, he answered. That's that.]
You're so bossy, god. [ She grimaces. As much as she wants to say it'll be no problem, they both know she'd be lying. Eddie and Steve have...disparate tastes in music. Like they do in pretty much everything else. ] How about we just drive in silence.
Fine. [ Her grimace smooths out into a gentle smile, and she lets herself curl up in her bed and get a little cozier, warmed by Steve's voice and the promise of a proper date on the horizon. ] I'll even accept Queen if I must.
[ Not that she'll admit it, but she kind of likes both Queen and Bowie. So this feels like a win-win for her. ]
Even? How dare you. Freddy Mercury's a legend. [A yawn splits Steve's mouth and he smoothers it with a fist.] How you doing? It's a school night, after all.
[ She resists the urge to let out a sigh, because Steve's right. It's getting late, and she does have school in the morning. Technically. She needs to go, needs to hand in her assignments, needs to take her quizzes or whatever, because she wants to graduate this year. She wants to be proud of herself for a change.
She wants Steve to be proud of her, too. ]
I should let you go. Thanks for staying up with me.
Okay. [ She's not that tired, except that she is. She lets herself sigh this time and reaches out to turn off her light. ] Good night, Steve. I love you.
